Mississippi Bill Would Find Anyone Who Performs An Abortion Guilty Of Murder

JACKSON, Mississippi (WLBT) – A new bill introduced to the Mississippi legislature would find anyone who performs or causes an abortion guilty of murder.

The bill, drafted by DeSoto Rep Dan Eubanks, would also make it a crime for anyone to willfully induce an abortion.

It comes just over a year after a federal appeals court ruled that Mississippi’s ban on abortion at 15 weeks was unconstitutional, siding with a 2018 ruling by U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves.

State lawmakers would come back and pass a more restrictive law to ban most abortions at around six weeks. Reeves blocked that too.

In October 2020, Mississippi filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court seeking clarification on the unconstitutionality of the 15-week abortion ban. Heads of state at the time said the court may be willing to consider the case.

The ultimate goal, said a law professor at Mississippi College School of Law, is to enforce the 15 week abortion ban or repeal or significantly reduce Roe v. Wade.
