Mete vs. Brannstrom, a Marketing Slogan & Why Fans Should Chill Out About Brady Tkachuk – The Athletic

We have officially hit the summer heatwave in the hockey world.

(Or as we call them here, the summer days of the Daugavins.)

The crazy week that included expansion, draft and free agency is now in our rearview mirror. Training camps don’t open for seven weeks, leaving us with his delicate place in the hockey calendar where nothing seems to be happening.

Even though it’s supposed to be calm, there is an ominous silence that has enveloped the Ottawa Senators. It feels like something big is brewing, like the addition of a veteran center or the replacement of Evgenii Dadonov on the right wing.

Or maybe they’ll add another defender just to annoy us.

Speaking of defenders, that brings us directly to the first question in the mailbag this week.

Note: Questions can be edited for clarity and style.

How many of Erik Brannstrom, Victor Mete and Logan Brown are on the opening night list? – Matthew T.

That’s a fantastic question because as it stands I don’t see a place for all three on opening night.

Let’s analyze the defense picture and start with what we know for sure. From the crop of returning blueliners, Thomas Chabot, Artem Zub and Nikita Zaitsev will be in the lineup for the opening night. The club just signed Michael Del Zotto on a two-year, $ 4 million contract, so it’s more than fair to assume he will slip into roster for Game 1.

This leaves two places available for the following defenders: Victor Mete, Erik Brannstrom, Nick Holden, Josh Brown and Jacob Bernard-Docker.
